Mount Kilimanjaro
•Mount Kilimanjaro is located in the country Tanzania but the continent of Africa. It is made up of two extinct and one dormant volcanoes and not known to have an official nickname.
•The mountain is the second ranking on the National Geographic list of best climbs, it is right behind Mount Khuiten located in Mongolia.
•It is 19,340 feet tall at its highest peak which is known as, Uhuru.
•Ludwig Purtscheller and Hans Meyer are credited for the first ascent that was acctually successful. Their climb took place in 1889 and must have been difficult because of the 10,000 feet between base and the summit.
•The mountain is in the range of the East African Mountains of Northwestern Tanzania.
•Some recommended months for climbing include, January, February, March, June, July, August, and December.
•Mount Kilimanjaro is a stracto volcano being made up of two extinct and one dormant volcano known as Mawenzi, Shira, and Kibo. Kino is the highest of the three.
•The words "Kilima Njaro" mean "shining mountain" in Swahili which is what the mountain was named for at the time.
