About the Author
John Steinbeck, the author of the Pearl, went through the tragedy of the Dust Bowl. Life was hard for him and his family, he was raised by his loving parents and put himself through Stanford University in his college years. He was born in Salinas, California, into a family of moderate means, meaning, they were neither rich nor poor, they were a middle class family. Steinbeck died of heart disease and congestive heart failure in New York, in 1968, he was sixty-six years old. On March 4, 1969, Steinbeck's ashes were buried. A cause of Steinbeck's death was that he was known to be a life-long smoker. (As shown in the picture to the left) Steinbeck's death was said to have brought an end to one of the greatest literary careers in history. John Steinbeck is the only author is history that has a full museum dedicated only to himself and his work. A well known writer, such as this, is a great decision for a book we should read.
